As a startup, entrepreneur or small business owner you need to be blogging on a regular basis if you want to increase your traffic, generate more leads and maximise sales .Blogging is an essential part of your sales funnel. The good news is that blogging is relatively simple. But the hard part is being consistent and creating quality content regularly. There is no point writing a boring blog post nobody will want to read, you need to write a kickass blog post!  In this post I will show you how.

If you run a business, content marketing should be at the heart of your business strategy and should be worked on as soon as you start building your startup or small business. If you don’t have one yet, stop what you’re doing now and focus on content creation and curation today!

5 simple steps to blogging success!

By following the 5 steps below you have all the ingredients you need for creating a kickass blog post and the recipe for blogging success!

Step 1 –  Create killer content

To create a kickass blog post, quality content is key. It needs to be engaging and tailored to your audience. Find out what they are interested in. You need to find a balance between what you’re knowledgeable and passionate about, and what your target market wants to read. Creating a customer persona can be very helpful before producing any content.

Step 2 – Write long blog posts regularly

Longer blog posts add more value and are better for SEO (Search Engine Optimization). Studies have shown that the perfect blog post length is around 1,600 words and this number increases year after year. Aim for around 800 words if possible.  Creating high quality content consistently and on a regular basis is key.

Step 3 – Follow The AIDA Marketing Model

Another useful tool I use to help me write a kickass blog post is the AIDA Marketing Model.

AIDA is an acronym and helps you consider the actions you need to take at each stage of the marketing process as you attempt to move your audience on towards the ultimate objective, a conversion.

The 4 stages comprise of:

Awareness: This is what you do to make your audience aware of who you are and what your brand, product or service does.

Interest: They know who you are. You now need to give them a reason to take a closer look into how you can help them.

Desire: Your communication should be trying to create an emotional bond with your audience and move them from liking to wanting what you offer.

Action: What is it you want them to do next? Your Call To Action needs to persuade them to take the next step e.g. download, call, buy etc.

Too many businesses waste time and effort creating a “Brand Awareness” campaign with no real thought as to what happens next. A killer blog post must end with a call to action. Think about what you want your reader to do next?

Step 4 -Illustrate your blog with images and infographics

A killer blog post should always include images. Images are an easy way for viewers to understand information while merely “snacking”.  Snacking is the process of skimming over information rather than reading every word of every line and carefully considering as you go.

They say ‘a picture’s worth a thousand words’. Well, a relevant image will certainly add to the message to be conveyed in your blog. That also applies to infographics. They can deliver complex information via simple images, making it a lot easier to understand. Finally, an image makes your blog more visually interesting. Think about it: what’s more interesting – a long piece of text or a blog with images and text?

Step 5 -Make sure your blog post is SEO-optimised

SEO optimised blog posts are a powerful tool for increasing your online visibility . Here are six easy search engine optimization (SEO) tips to help get your blog noticed:

Do your keyword research

Keyword research is essential for on page optimization. Chances are you are naturally including keywords without realizing it simply by providing valuable content on a topic. However, there are a variety of tools and techniques for finding related keywords relevant to your blog post that you may not have considered. The Google Adwords Keyword Tool and semrush.com both offer great tools that allow you to find keywords related to your topic and even spy on your competition to see what words and phrases they are targeting to bring traffic to their sites.

Utilize keywords throughout your post

Once you have targeted a couple of valuable, relevant keywords, it is important to place them where they will have the most impact for humans and search engine crawlers indexing your content.

Optimize your images

Whenever you upload a photo to your blog, be sure to include keywords in the file name and fill out the alternate text field with a brief, keyword rich description of the photo

Reference others with links

When you mention another blogger or article in your blog post, include a link to the information you are referencing. Not only is it good blogging etiquette, but you may also get lucky and receive a link back. Quality links are a valuable commodity for any site looking to rank higher in search engine results pages.

Give readers the opportunity to subscribe to your blog

Include prominently placed RSS or Feed Subscription Buttons and offer viewers the ability to subscribe to your posts via email when possible. This allows your blog followers to have instant notification of your latest posts without having to periodically check your site for new content.

Use social media to broaden the reach of your blog posts

As a small business, you may be utilizing Facebook, Twitter, Google+, or other social media sites to create connections with potential and current customers. Why not promote your blog content on these sites for even more web exposure? Tools like Hootsuite make it easy to post links to your latest blog post on all of your social media sites with just a couple of clicks. You can even schedule your posts ahead of time!

You should now have all the ingredients you need to create a kickass blog post. However, if you don’t have the time or would rather outsource your blogging to a professional , you’re in the right place!
